A Township Shaped by the Airport

Tree Service in Moon Township covers a lot of ground. The township spans about 24 square miles along the Ohio River, roughly 12 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, and its population grew from 22,290 in 2000 to 27,261 in 2020. Much of that growth followed the airport. Pittsburgh's airport opened here in 1951 and drove development for decades; when the terminal moved to Findlay Township in 1991, Moon shifted toward offices, new homes and Robert Morris University.

Housing in three eras

What we see in Moon yards lines up with when the houses went in.

1940s Mooncrest. The federal government built the Mooncrest housing plan in 1943 for defense workers, and the homes were sold to private investors in the mid-1950s. Trees on those lots are often 70 years old or more, and some were planted closer to the houses than anyone would plant today.

Postwar and airport-era streets. Ranches and split-levels from the 1950s through the 1980s, with silver maples, pin oaks and white pines that are now very large.

Recent subdivisions. Newer homes on old farm and woodland ground, where the main issue is usually woods at the back of the lot.

Hills and stream valleys

The township's history describes broken, hilly land between the river and the old farms, cut by the valleys of Montour Run, Thorn Run and Narrows Run. Those valleys are wooded and steep, and trees at the top of a slope above a back yard can be hard to reach and dangerous to fell. We often take them down in sections, lowering wood on ropes rather than dropping a whole trunk toward a house.

Wind across open ground

Open ground around the airport corridor and along the river bluffs leaves some lots more exposed to wind than the sheltered valleys. White pines and spruces planted as windbreaks along property lines tend to fail first, often snapping mid-trunk. If you have a row of tall conifers along a lot line that are thinning at the bottom and top-heavy, that is worth a look before winter.

Across the river

The Sewickley Bridge connects Moon with Sewickley, Edgeworth and Glen Osborne on the north bank. Many of our Moon calls come from neighborhoods near the bridge, but we cover the whole township, including the corporate and university side.

Before you call

It helps to know where the tree's trunk is in relation to your property line, whether wires run through or near it, and what is under it, such as a shed, a fence, or a septic field on the larger lots. If any of that is unclear, we sort it out on the visit. Every estimate lists the trees, the work on each, how debris is handled and the price, so there is nothing to guess about afterward.

Moon Township Questions

Our row of white pines along the property line is getting thin and tall. Should we worry?

Possibly. Old windbreak pines often lose their lower limbs and carry all their weight up top, which makes them prone to snapping in strong wind. We can check them for lean, decay and crown condition and suggest removal or thinning tree by tree.

The tree is at the top of a steep wooded slope behind our house. Can it be removed safely?

Usually by taking it down in sections from the top, with each piece lowered on a rope. That keeps heavy wood from rolling down toward the house. Slope and access are part of the written estimate.

Do you work in Mooncrest?

Yes. Mooncrest's older lots often have big, mature trees close to houses, and we handle pruning and removal there along with the rest of the township.

How old are the trees in Mooncrest?

The plan was built in 1943, so trees planted with the first houses can be 70 to 80 years old. Many of those early plantings were fast-growing species that are now near the end of their useful life, especially silver maples close to houses.
