Three Owners, One Street
Tree Service in Crafton is easier once you know which trees belong to whom. On a typical Crafton street there can be three different parties responsible for the trees in view. The borough's Shade Tree Commission page says the borough is responsible for trees in the tree lawn, the strip between the sidewalk and the street. Duquesne Light is responsible for pruning some of those tree lawn trees where they grow near overhead power lines. Everything on the house side of the sidewalk is private, and the borough states it does not maintain trees on private property. That last group is where we come in.
A dense, early-1900s borough
Crafton was incorporated in January 1892 and covers about 1.14 square miles, with about 6,099 residents in 2020. A trolley linked it to downtown Pittsburgh from 1896, and many of its landmark buildings date from 1906 to 1938. The lots are narrow and the houses are close, so a large backyard tree usually has a neighbor's roof, a garage and overhead wires within reach of its limbs. Few back yards have a driveway wide enough for a truck, so most removals here are climbed and lowered in pieces.
Chartiers Creek country
The borough sits above Chartiers Creek, which flows northwest to the Ohio River at McKees Rocks. The creek valley has long shaped the area, and the steeper streets that drop toward it mean some yards are terraced with walls. Trees growing at the top of an old retaining wall can push it out as their roots and trunks get bigger. We check walls as part of any estimate for a tree that grows along one.
What the borough offers, and what we do
Crafton's Shade Tree Commission runs an annual planting program, and residents can ask for a free tree for their yard. The borough also has a licensed arborist who advises on its tree work, and it takes requests for pruning, removal and hazardous or nuisance trees in the tree lawn through a Shade Tree Request Form. For a tree on your own lot, you hire the work yourself. Typical Crafton jobs for us include:
- Removing a large backyard maple or locust that has outgrown a narrow lot
- Reducing limbs over a neighbor's roof or a shared alley
- Clearing deadwood over porches and detached garages
- Grinding stumps so a free borough tree, or one of your own, can be planted in a better spot
Before you call about a tree near a wire
If the problem is a tree lawn tree touching a power line, that is a borough and Duquesne Light question rather than a homeowner job. If it is your own tree touching the service drop to your house, call us and we will tell you whether the utility needs to drop or guard the line first.

How Trees Are Handled in Crafton
- Tree lawn trees are the borough's. Crafton is responsible for trees in the tree lawn between the sidewalk and the street, and Duquesne Light prunes some tree lawn trees near overhead power lines. The borough does not maintain trees on private property.
- Free yard trees on request. The Shade Tree Commission runs an annual planting program and residents can request a free tree for their yard. Commission members must be full-time residents and become certified Tree Tenders.
- A compact, older borough. Incorporated January 8, 1892, Crafton covers about 1.14 square miles and had 6,099 residents in 2020. Trolley service to downtown began in 1896, and many landmark buildings date from 1906 to 1938.

Crafton Questions
The tree between my sidewalk and the curb is dropping limbs. Who do I call?
That's a tree lawn tree, which Crafton says is the borough's responsibility. Use the borough's Shade Tree Request Form or call the borough office. If it's tangled in power lines, Duquesne Light may handle it.
Can I get a free tree for my yard?
Crafton's Shade Tree Commission says residents can request a free tree for their yard through its annual program. If an old stump is in the way, we can grind it so the new tree has a clean spot.
There's no way to get a truck into my back yard. Can the tree still come down?
Yes. Most Crafton backyard removals are climbed and lowered in sections with ropes, then carried out to the street. It takes more labor, which the written estimate will reflect.
Do you prune trees that hang over the alley behind my house?
Yes, as long as the trunk is on your property or you have the owner's permission. We prune back to proper branch unions and keep the alley clear while we work, then sweep and haul the debris.
